Reengineering Nature in Silicon Valley, a Virtual Ethnography
A downloadable Installation for Windows
Welcome to the Reengineering Nature Project! Our team of San Jose State University ethnographers is opening the window on the lives of Silicon Valley people.
This virtual reality experience mirrors the real world. It is based on observations and interviews with real people, struggling with decisions that will shape the future, many of whom create the technologies that are entering our world through the Internet of things, virtual reality, and mobile computing. These workers and makers navigate diverse cultural values, juggling capitalist values of individualism, profit-seeking, and control with countercultural values of empathy, connection, mindfulness, sharing, and creativity.
Our virtual reality experience is relatively easy to explore. This prototype contains two of our four environments - a coworking space, and a kitchen maker space. The garden and public square are coming soon. Explore these spaces and get a sense of anthropology in Silicon Valley!
